THE IRONMAN CHAMPIONSHIP IN LAS VEGAS

Spaniard Mikel Calahorra and Kuwaiti Anwar Hussain are both representing the Kingdom of Bahrain at the Ironman 70.3 World Championship, taking place today in Las Vegas, Nevada in the US. Calahorra and Hussain are competing with the backing of Supreme Council for Youth and Sports chairman and Bahrain Olympic Committee president Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa.

Shaikh Nasser said that their participation in the global event will help in the promotion of Bahrain to the rest of the world, especially on the sporting side, where the kingdom is keen to being a major player on the international scene.

Shaikh Nasser added that he is confident in the abilities of Calahorra and Hussain in achieving a pair of positive results, despite the high quality of the competition with professional athletes coming from all over the world.

Hopeful

Shaikh Nasser is especially hopeful for Calahorra, who had also represented Bahrain at the Ironman 70.3 event in Berlin in June.

Calahorra qualified for today's mega race after finishing third in the 25 to 29 age-group while placing 33rd overall in that Germany triathlon, in which Shaikh Nasser was also a participant and finisher.

The Ironman 70.3 World Championship is held at Lake Las Vegas, located just minutes away from the Las Vegas Strip.

The race begins with a 1.2-mile swim at the Lake Las Vegas Resort, after which athletes will embark on a challenging 56-mile bike through Lake Mead National Recreation Area that includes several steep climbs.

Participants will finish with a 13.1-mile run through scenic residential areas with views of the Las Vegas Strip. More than 2,000 athletes are expected to take part in the event this year.

Participants in the world championship range in age from 18 to 70-plus and represent nearly 50 countries. Each age-group winner will automatically qualify for the 2014 event in Mont-Tremblant, Quebec, Canada. The world championship also offers a prize purse of $200,000 for distribution among the top professional male and female finishers.
